Join Up!

The objects of the Murray Clan Society are to promote social links among people linked to the name Murray, and to stimulate interest in the history, culture and traditions of the Clan.

While the Clan Murray Society of North America has gone from strength to strength the parent Murray Clan Society here in the UK has been in hibernation for a few years now… following the excellent example and helpful advice of our transatlantic cousins we are looking for members of any name and background with an interest in the Murray Clan and also enthusiasts for the posts of President, Treasurer, Secretary, Newsletter Editor, Webmaster, Genealogist, Historian, and Piper.

Membership for this year will be free until we have something to offer by way of a newsletter, full website, merchandise, and events although contributions towards hiring spaces for our tent as we gather the clan together would be most welcome.

If you are wish to join up please sign our book at the Murray Clan tent at The Gathering 2009 or contact Anna Moray Parker c/o Estate Office, Abercairny, Crieff, Perthshire PH7 3NQ or email us at murrayclansociety@abercairny.com.

A Few Murray Clan Facts...

Our Chief is His Grace John Murray, 11th Duke of Atholl.

The Duke commands the only legal private regiment in Europe, the Atholl Highlanders, who can been seen in all their splendor at the annual parade at Blair Castle. Other Murray Clan strongholds open to the public include Scone Palace, Duffus Castle, Bothwell Castle, Ormond Castle, and Balvaird Castle:

Other families closely associated with the Murray Clan, by allegiance and descent through the female line, include Balneaves, Dinsmore, Dunsmore, Fleming, Neaves, Piper, Pyper, Smail, Smale, Small, Smeal, and Spaulding.

Clan members traditionally recognised eachother by placing Juniper or Butchers Broom in their bonnets. Heraldic devices used by various branches of the family include three five pointed silver stars on a blue background, the peacock with the motto ‘Praite’ meaning ‘Ready’, the mermaid with the motto ‘Tout Prest’ or ‘Prepared’, and the demi-savage with the motto ‘Furth Fortune and Fill the Fetters’ or ‘go onward with fortune and return with hostages’.

We wear the Murray of Atholl and Murray of Tullibardine tartans. These are availiable in modern and more muted 'antique' settings.
